About the Author
Darcey Bussell is a world famous Prima Ballerina. She joined the Royal Ballet School when she was 13 and, despite starting later than most of the other students, became a Principal of the Royal Ballet at just 19, at the same time the youngets ballerina ever to be given this honour. Darcey received both the OBE and CBE awards during her time with the Royal Ballet, and since officially retiring in 2007 she has teamed up with Katherine Jenkins in the phenomenally successful Viva la Diva. She is married with two daughters.
Review
This first book in the Magic Ballerina series introduces the reader to Delphie and takes us on the first of her magical adventures brought about by a pair of Magic Ballet Shoes she has been given.
Darcey Bussell love of and knowledge of the world of ballet is evident throughout her books in which she introduces readers to famous ballets and some of their well-known characters. Delphie and the Magic Ballet Shoes tells the story of the The Nutcracker during which Delphie helps The Sugar Plum Fairy rescue The Nutcracker from the King Rat who has turned him into a toy in an effort to stop the dancing in the world of Enchantia.
At the end of the book, we are given a short preview of the next book in the series and last but definitely not least, Darcey Bussell includes instructions and diagrams on performing ballet steps such as Preparation through to Fifth Position.
The chapters are a nice length for those just beginning to read chapter books for themselves with illustrations on most pages to provide a break from the text and to help the young reader visualise the story.
My daughter was captivated and didn't want to put it down. She is absolutely hooked and can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series.
Without a doubt, the Magic Ballerina books will become a treasured favourite of young girls and budding ballerinas.
