Child's Review

I didn't like the way it began with "MARLEY WAS DEAD" - it's not a very nice way to start a story!  But the rest of the book was good.  I particularly like the way the spirits visited Scrooge and showed him what a nice person he was in the past and what a horrible person he is now.  I especially like how he decided to change his behaviour when he saw what his future would be like if he continued to be a horrible grumpy person.

I thought the pictures are great in describing the story.  They are bright and colourful when showing happy people having a good time.  And when the story is sad and scary the pictures are dark and gloomy with lots of blues and greys.  I also though that the pictures did a good job of showing me what life was like in the olden days.

Parent's Review

'Bah humbug!' is a well-known expression that most of us will recognise and possibly even use from time-to-time.  Likewise, labelling a person as being a 'Scrooge' immediately conjures up images of a grumpy, tight-fisted, party-pooper.

Whether or not you've read the original manuscript of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, you will no doubt be familiar with story of Ebenezer Scrooge - a grumpy businessman, who's life is changed for the better when he is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve.  It is a wonderful story reflecting upon the vast separation of wealth and poverty, privilege and hardships, power and helplessness, in Victorian society.  It also examines the various forms human nature takes and delivers an important message - that it is never too late to make amends and to change your behaviours to ensure a happier life and a more postivie future.

This abridged version of the Charles Dickens classic is highly accessible and will appeal to readers of all ages.  Brett Helquist's stunning illustrations bring the diverse characters to life and his exquisite attention to detail transports the reader back to the Victorian era.

A Christmas Carol illustrated by Brett Helquist will become a treasured addition to every family's library.  Gift it to a loved one or treat yourself and create an annual tradition of sharing this classic tale at Christmas time.
