Synopsis

"Food is an important part of every culture.  It reflects and affects many areas - from religious beliefs to health.  Sharing food is the best way to celebrate family and friendship at occasions big and small.  And, in the sharing, many tales emerge." - Kate Fraser

Award-winning food writer Kate Fraser takes readers on a culinary journey through kiwi kitchens from the 1930s to the present day.  Through a collection of recipes and anecdotes from the kitchens of engaging fictitious characters, the reader is provided with a fascinating retrospective of our culinary traditions and a tasty overview of the development of our national food culture.

Some characters stories are based on Kate's own experiences, and the life and times of her extended family.  Some are a mixture of memories and acquaintances.  Some are completely imagined.

More than just nostalgic memories, Cooking Times serves up an array of delicious and intriguing recipes that are easy to cook and even better to eat.

About the Author

Kate Fraser is the editor of Zest, the food and fashion section of The Press.  She draws on a family heritage of cooking and entertaining to create uncomplicated and stylish recipes.  Her country upbringing taught her practical skills; her travels in Greece, Turkey, France, the US and Asia broadened her palate.  Kate lives in Canterbury and sometimes in Otago.

Review

The recipes in Cooking Times  are grouped by decades from the 1930s to present day.  It is really interesting and unique in the way each chapter begins with a fictional narrative from a character to put the reader into the era.  After she has set the scene, Kate then shares a series of recipes from that era, followed by a set of Kitchen Tips and Useful Hints for Daily Life to finish.

The food culture in New Zealand has changed a great deal in just the past ten years.  The format of Cooking Times in examining the developments decade, by decade, makes for a fascinating read.

The recipes themselves are like the icing on the cake!!

Those who grew up in New Zealand Cooking Times will be a great moment of nostalgia, whilst others will enjoy reading about what Kiwis have eaten over the decades.
